¿Qué es el sueño americano para los inmigrantes de Estados Unidos?

Es más importante que nunca celebrar a los inmigrantes que viven en los Estados Unidos y por eso es importante entender qué es el sueño americano para ellos.

Más de 42.4 millones de migrantes viven en Estados Unidos en busca de oportunidades y sueños lejos de sus seres queridos.

Si hacemos una pausa para reflexionar sobre las motivaciones profundas que tienen nuestras comunidades de migrantes, así como el valor financiero y cultural que le brindan a nuestro país, podemos restablecer el camino hacia la construcción de un sistema de migración justo y equitativo para el siglo XXI, que incluya a todos los niños, soñadores y trabajadores, que buscan lograr el sueño americano.

¿Qué es el sueño americano?

Nuestra visión es transformar las vidas de los migrantes y sus familias brindándoles los servicios financieros más confiables. Para realizar esta visión, estamos profundamente comprometidos con entender a las comunidades de inmigrantes y cuáles son sus necesidades, para así poder defenderlos de la mejor manera.

Queremos que el mundo vea lo que nosotros vemos: que son héroes, que trabajan arduamente para apoyar a sus seres queridos, los cuales dependen del dinero que les envían como apoyo vital.

Por esa razón, nos sumergimos en un segmento de esta población migrante: los latinos de primera generación en los Estados Unidos.

Llevamos a cabo un estudio sobre Sentimiento Migrante para ayudarnos a descubrir actitudes y experiencias sobre su búsqueda del sueño americano, después de venir a los Estados Unidos.

Los resultados son esclarecedores.

Nueve de cada diez migrantes en los Estados Unidos aún creen que el sueño americano se puede alcanzar.

La definición de lo que es el sueño americano depende de cada individuo, pero es maravilloso ver tal optimismo y esperanza a pesar del clima político actual y las amenazas que ellos enfrentan a diario.

Una mayoría abrumadora de migrantes cree que con trabajo arduo, el éxito y la felicidad son alcanzables, y el 60 % aún recomendaría trasladarse a los Estados Unidos a sus amigos y familiares.

Si bien la mayoría de los encuestados mencionaron el acceso a la educación y un nivel de vida más alto (49 y 47 por ciento, respectivamente), como las ventajas más claras de mudarse a los Estados Unidos, también es cierto que los migrantes enfrentan numerosas dificultades.

Cuando se les preguntó si, dada la posibilidad, elegirían mudarse a los Estados Unidos nuevamente, el 25 % de los migrantes mexicanos no elegiría quedarse en ese país. Y casi uno de cada cinco migrantes puertorriqueños y venezolanos (18 por ciento) expresaron lo mismo.

Historias de migrantes persiguiendo el sueño americano

“I’m from Los Angeles, but was raised in Mexico 🇲🇽 as a kid. My parents left their homes in Mexico to make a better life in the United States. I didn’t know anything about the United States when I came here; it was a culture shock. Coming from a place of very little upward mobility, I always heard my parents talking about the many opportunities available in the United States. I was scared to leave Mexico and cried because I left my friends behind. As an adult, I learned what my parents meant when they spoke of opportunities. I grew up to become the first member of my family to graduate from college with both a Bachelor’s and Masters degrees, started my own business, and made videos online for a living. Each opportunity has opened up doors to do something new and exciting. My dream is to grow my business and be able to hire people in my community. «I was born on the border of Mexico and the US, in the small cross-border town of Laredo, Texas. My father is from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas in Mexico 🇲🇽 and my mother is from Trapiche Abajo, Jutiapa in Guatemala🇬🇹. My mother migrated from Guatemala but reached a dead end at the Mexico-USA border, where she met my father. Eventually, my parents married and crossed the American border in time to give birth to me on the Texas side of Laredo (versus “Nuevo” Laredo). I lived in Mexico some of my infant years, was raised in Port Arthur (outside of Houston) and then moved to Miami and later Los Angeles. My mother ran away from poverty and my father fled crime. Both on the hunt for the American Dream; a dream that I also dream. Guatemala and Mexico; both full of violence, crime, drugs, poverty and little opportunity. Both countries are beautiful and unique but my parents knew quality of life could be better. My dream has always been to be successful enough not only for me but for my family; to help my parents so that they know their struggles weren’t for nothing. My mother wanted a better life for her future family. Collectively, our American Dream is to have equal opportunity to prosper, give back, help support our families back in Latin America. I dream the same dream as always, the same dream as my parents, the same dream of MLK. My dream now is about education, that having a job that’s more than just work; a career that’s impactful, makes my community proud, builds a legacy for my family, and spreads positivity and love.
