Standing with Typhoon Victims in Vietnam and the Philippines

Recently, a pair of deadly typhoons devastated regions of the Philippines and Vietnam. Many of the individuals affected are family members and friends of Remitly customers, and they will need extra support to rebuild after these disasters.

For that reason, Remitly waived the transfer fee for customers on their next transfer to the affected regions through November 5th. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims of these storms, as well as their family and friends.

Typhoon Molave in Vietnam

Typhoon Molave affected millions of people in Central Vietnam when it roared onto the coast in late October. Strong winds and torrential rain led to devastating landslides in the central province of Quảng Nam, known for forestry, fishing, and agriculture.

As one of the biggest storms to hit Vietnam in 20 years, the typhoon caused an estimated $430 million and left 80 people dead or missing.

Super Typhoon Goni (Rolly) in the Philippines

Known locally as Typhoon Rolly, this powerful storm hit land as the world’s strongest this year. It swept over the southern part of Luzon, the country’s main island, leaving a path of devastation that included flooding and landslides.

In Virac, where the storm first hit, the Red Cross estimates that nearly 90% of buildings were damaged. Elsewhere, the typhoon has displaced about 370,000 people and decimated tens of thousands of homes.

How to Help Typhoon Victims

In both the Philippines and Vietnam, you can donate to organizations working on the ground.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is leading rescue efforts in both countries to provide clean water, shelter, and food, and other necessities. Their donation page for Vietnam is here and for the Philippines is here.
