The devastating earthquake that recently impacted Morocco is one of the deadliest in the country’s modern history. We at Remitly want to express our heartfelt solidarity with the people of Morocco during these tragic times.
On September 9, 2023, an earthquake of significant magnitude struck the High Atlas mountain range, close to the cultural and economic powerhouse of Marrakech. The effects of the earthquake were felt far and wide, even as far as Casablanca to the north. Thousands have lost their lives, thousands more are injured, and still, others are missing.
The earthquake was particularly powerful, registering at 6.8 on the Richter scale and causing significant destruction, especially in communities near the base of the Atlas Mountains.
Morocco Earthquake Relief Efforts
While the government and international aid agencies have activated all available resources to help those in need, the mountainous terrain has made it difficult to reach certain areas. Despite these challenges, there is a spirit of unity and resilience among residents and authorities as they work to recover.
Our Commitment
We understand that during trying times like these, every little bit counts. We launched an employee giving campaign to support non-profit organizations responding to the immediate crisis in Morocco, and Remitly will match donations made during September through our campaign dollar for dollar, up to $5,000.We also made a special offer to customers sending money to Morocco in the time period immediately following the disaster.
