Who is Most Likely to Give A 5-Star Review in Brazil?

First making an appearance on social media in 2018, ‘Karen’ is now the name widely-used to reference an entitled individual who likes to complain a lot.

If you’re unfamiliar with the term, social media describes ‘a Karen’ as a privileged individual who likes to give unsolicited advice and police others on their personal choices. They will often ask to speak to the manager to complain about an employee for absolutely no reason. This sounds like every hospitality worker’s worst enemy – but is what they say about ‘Karens’ really true?

This social trend took off quickly and evolved into a mainstream term used across the world, that can even be found in some dictionaries! Unfortunately, this has left people with the name Karen now finding themselves associated with undesirable behaviors and receiving prejudice, despite not always ringing true.

In an attempt to debunk the Karen stereotype, we decided to look into the most likely names to leave a five-star review on Tripadvisor, to see where the name Karen ranks. We analyzed over 10,000 names across nearly 15,000 reviews for restaurants, hotels, and attractions in Brazil, including all historical reviews*, to identify the top ten names associated with the most generous reviews. Let’s see where Karen fits into all of this.

Who is the ultimate ‘Anti-Karen’ of Brazil?

The name David makes it to the top of our leaderboard. As such, we’ve crowned David the ‘anti-Karen’ of Brazil, the total opposite of pop culture’s Karen.

As the biggest ‘anti-Karen’, we can assume that ‘Davids’ are easy going and open-minded individuals who are more likely to spread positivity and give praise, rather than make complaints. The name David has biblical roots, deriving from the Hebrew word dod meaning ‘beloved’, which may suggest that people with the name David have a lot of love to share – this is certainly reflected in their reviews!

Following David, ‘Daniels’ are second most likely to leave a five-star review in Brazil, Next, those with the name Michael are third most-likely. Daniel and Michael are also biblical names, meaning ‘God is my judge’, and ‘gift from God’, which could suggest that ‘Daniels’ and ‘Michaels’ are righteous and fair.

How does your name affect the likelihood of you leaving a positive review?

Some researchers believe there is a correlation between someone’s name and their personality. Our personalities are made up of a variety of factors and are influenced by our life experiences, such as our upbringing, social interactions and even our DNA. So, how much influence can our names really have on our personalities?

Your name is one of the first things a stranger learns about you, which means it has a huge impact on how others identify and perceive you. Studies have shown that the rarity of your name can affect how you’re perceived by others, with more common names carrying more positive connotations and rarer or more ‘unfashionable’ less so. As a result, people with names like David, Daniel or Michael, which are extremely popular, are more likely to be well-received by peers and to be more generous. This generosity may extend to their behavior when leaving reviews, making these popular names more likely to leave a positive review for attractions, restaurants, and hotels.

Where does Karen rank in all this?

According to common stereotypes, ‘Karens’ are known for their pettiness and over exaggerations. However, you would expect this to be reflected in the reviews they leave online if these preconceptions were true.

Yet, our data suggests that ‘Karens’ may not be living up to their name, and are actually proving social media wrong. The name Karen makes it to number 47 on our leaderboard, and it is the 9th most likely female name to leave a five-star review. So, in fact, ‘Karens’ are quite likely to give positive reviews and perfect ratings on restaurants, attractions, and hotels.

Our analysis reveals that locals with the name Paulo are most likely to leave five-star reviews on Tripadvisor in Brazil.

The name Paulo, meaning small or humble, is the Portuguese form of the name Paul, and is a very popular name in Brazil. Paulo, or Paul, is a biblical name, deriving from one of the 12 Apostles in the New Testament, which is commonly associated with gestures of goodwill and respect.

Are men or women more likely to leave a 5-star review in Brazil?

For another layer of comparison, we decided to look at the gender split between male and females who leave five-star reviews. We understand that many names are not gender-specific, however, we have used the most common use of the listed names in order to base our analysis on.

Men are 3.5x more likely to leave a 5-star review than women

We analyzed the top 50 names most likely to leave a five-star review to find out whether men or women are more generous when it comes to giving a perfect star-rating online. With not one single female name ranking in the top 10 tourist names and just one in the top 10 local names, we can assume that men are much more likely to leave a positive review than women in Brazil.

Analyzing the top 50 names on our leaderboard, there are 39 male names and just 11 female names, which confirms our findings. It also reveals that men are 3.5 times more likely to leave a five-star review than women.

Who are the top 10 male and female reviewers?

Looking at the top 10 male and top 10 female names with the most five-star ratings, including both locals and tourists, we identified the most likely male and female names to leave a five-star review in Brazil.

Topping our leaderboard for female names is Ana. Ana is the Spanish derivative of names such as Anne, Anna, or Hannah. The name has biblical connotations meaning ‘favored grace’, making reference to the Old Testament. Ana has long been a fashionable name across the world, and with its religious origins, can be associated with politefullness and thoughtfulness – suggesting that someone with the name Ana would be likely to leave a positive review.

Ana is shortly followed by Barbara, a popular name both in Brazil and the US, and Fernanda. Fernanda is a Portuguese and Spanish name meaning ‘bold journey’ or ‘adventurous’, which may be why people with the name Fernanda are open to speak their mind and leave positive reviews.

It seems that there are a higher number of names with Spanish or Portuguese origins in the top rankings, for both males and females. This suggests that locals or frequent visitors are more likely to leave a five-star review than tourists.

How to write excellent reviews

Customers trust real people more than brands themselves when it comes to purchasing products or services, which is why it’s important to leave reviews for businesses. They are a great way to share your experiences and help others make the right choice. Here are our top tips for writing excellent reviews online.

1. Provide helpful details

We recommend including as much detail as possible in your review, providing the finer details about your experience and examples to support your verdict. Didn’t have the best experience? Explain why! Had the time of your life? Tell others exactly what made it so special. Also, be specific about what products you bought or the services you had.

2. Be honest and fair

One of the most important things to remember when it comes to leaving reviews is to be honest and fair. Don’t be a keyword warrior. You should be polite, as real people are going to be reading your review. Even if you didn’t have a good experience, you can provide constructive criticism and convey this in a respectful manner. If it’s not useful to the business or other customers, then consider leaving it out.

3. Personalize your review

Anyone can read generic, and salesy, information about a business by heading to their website, so use your review to tell a story about your personal experience. Remember to include a few brief details about yourself and why you visited, such as describing whether you visited as a family or a couple. Describe what you enjoyed most and what would have made your experience better.

4. Include photographs

A picture tells a thousand words. It can be a good idea to take a few snaps and include these in your review, so that other customers have better insight into your experience and can see what you are referring to. This could be a picture of the food you ate, the view from your hotel room or your favorite art exhibitions.

5. Proofread your review

Before submitting your review, take the time to give it a once over or ask a friend to proofread for you. This is to make sure that it makes sense and free from spelling mistakes. Other customers are much more likely to read and trust your recommendations if it’s well written.

Methodology and sources

We analyzed data from Tripadvisor to create a list of the ‘most likely names to leave a five-star review’ in Brazil. The data includes all historical reviews and is up to date and correct as of September 2022.

This data was compiled based on the ‘top 10’ pages for restaurants, hotels, and attractions in Brazil on TripAdvisor.  Remitly then crawled over 10,000 names across nearly 15,000 reviews to identify the names of the top reviewers. The 10 names that appeared most often were named the most generous reviewers, and therefore the most likely to leave a five-star review.

These data points were also analyzed and segmented to create a ‘most likely’ list for tourists, local tourists, and men/women. Local names were selected based on the most common names in the country, while the tourist list was based on all the reviews with traditionally non-local names.
