Here at Remitly, we’ve created a guide to help you renew your Dominican passport in Spain successfully.

What are the requirements for renewing your Dominican passport?

Clearly understanding the requirements can help you throughout the renewal process. Renewal for the Dominican passport occurs every 6 years, and to carry out the process you must consider the following:

  • It’s aimed at naturalized Dominicans over 18 years of age (legal age).
  • You need an original Dominican birth certificate with a legal stamp on the back. Ensure it’s no more than 4 years old. If you don’t have this, you can get one at the Central Electoral Board of the Dominican Republic (JCE), potentially for an additional cost.
  • You’re required to submit a copy of both sides of your Dominican identity and electoral card (new card).
  • Bring a recent 6 x 5 cm color photograph. It must be an original file with a white background where you appear from the front and with your face and ears visible. Avoid wearing accessories that hinder your identification. You can bring your own photograph (you need 4 copies for the in-person procedure) or have it taken at the consulate at an additional cost.
  • If you’re renewing your passport due to expiration or deterioration, you must present the previous passport plus a photocopy of the first page where the photograph is visible (or attach the copy if you’re doing the procedure via the web). If your previous passport deteriorated, request an affidavit of deterioration at the consulate.
  • If you’re renewing it due to loss, attach a police report that states the loss of the Dominican passport. You can also request an affidavit of loss.
  • You need to fill out a form with your signature and fingerprint. Via web, you must also complete a form with 10 fingerprints.
  • You must have a copy of your residence card or ID card from your place of residence.

Where can I renew my Dominican passport in Spain?

Unlike in other countries, you can complete the procedure remotely or in person. If you wish to renew it online, visit the Consulate of Madrid website and attach all the requirements listed in the previous section. Scan the documents at maximum resolution, apart from the photograph, which must be an original digital file.

If you prefer to do it in person, visit one of the Dominican consular offices in Spain. Most of them require an appointment. This is the case if you want to renew your Dominican passport in Barcelona or other consular offices. The only exception is the Madrid office, where you only need an appointment for the visa.

To facilitate the process, here’s the list of Dominican consulates in Spain:

How much does it cost to renew my Dominican passport?

At the end of 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic (Mirex) announced that consular services to Dominicans abroad would have a standard price for all.

Currently, the costs range from 90 to 200 USD (adjusted to the currency of each country), depending on the category of the document, the time of validity, the country where it’s requested, and whether it’s a process of issuance or renewal. For example, in Spain, the cost of renewing a passport because of expiration is 90 euros, regardless of the consulate where you apply for it.

When will I receive my new Dominican passport?

Since the delivery of your new passport isn’t immediate, complete the renewal procedure on time so your old passport doesn’t expire before you receive your new one. A regular passport (valid for 6 years) takes approximately 25 to 30 days, while the VIP passport or passport book takes between 3 and 7 days. The VIP service isn’t always available; check its availability at the time of your application.
