What do you need to renew your Salvadoran passport in the United States?

The first thing to keep in mind is that for your passport application, whether for the first time, renewal or replacement, you must go in person to an embassy or consulate general of El Salvador in the USA.

Documents Required for Your Salvadoran Passport Renewal in the U.S.

To renew Salvadoran passport for adults 18 or older, you will need:

  • Unique identity document or DUI, original and valid.
  • Original or soon to be expired passport
  • If you have changed your name or family/marital status, you must present your new current DUI.
  • Receipt of payment for your new passport.

If you lost your passport due to loss or theft, you must present:

  • Unique identity document or DUI, original, valid and in good condition.
  • Make an affidavit for the theft, loss, or misplacement of your document.
  • Receipt of payment of the cost of your new Salvadoran passport.
  • Please note that if you have consecutive losses, you will have to pay a fine equivalent to three times the value of the passport.

To get your Salvadoran passport for the first time, you need:

  • Your original and valid identity card.
  • Birth certificate if you have it.
  • Receipt of payment of your new passport.
  • Certificate of naturalization.

Steps to renew your Salvadoran Passport

1. Gather all documents

Gather all the documents mentioned above, depending on your case.

2. Schedule your appointment at the nearest consulate

Once you have all the documents, schedule an appointment at one of the Salvadoran consulates that best suits your needs.

To schedule an appointment, visit the appointment portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador.

3. Go to your appointment and make the corresponding payment

Once you schedule your appointment, or determine the day you wish to process your passport, you must pay the passport fee.

Below you will find the corresponding costs according to the passport you need to obtain.

Cost of renewal and issuance of Salvadoran passport

  • For renewal and first time: $60 USD
  • For theft, loss, or misplacement: $80 USD (value of the passport $60 USD + $20 USD affidavit).

Remember that in case you have to pay a fine for recurrent losses, which would be triple the regular value of the passport, the total cost of the passport would be $260 USD, including the $180 USD fine.
