World Siblings Day

Share:

April 10th is World Siblings Day. Also known as National Siblings Day or National Sibling Day, though can be considered international because it shares similarities with the Indian holiday, Raksha Bandhan. It is also spreading to more countries like Australia. It is celebrated in some parts of the United States. Since 1998, the governors of 49 states have officially recognized Siblings Day in their state.

In India, Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakshabandhan, is centered around the tying of a thread on the wrist as a form of ritual protection. The protection is offered mostly by sisters to brothers, but also by priests to patrons. On the day of Raksha Bandhan, sisters tie the thread, called the rakhi, around the wrists of their brothers, protecting their brothers and receiving a gift from them in return. The expression “Raksha Bandhan” translated to “the bond of protection, obligation, or care.”

At Remitly, we are inspired by the sisters, brothers, aunts, and uncles all around the world who send love and support to their families. It must be difficult to be away, but the support and love you show your family from afar is admirable.
