As many know, Hurricane Harvey struck southeast Texas late August. The Category 4 hurricane brought heavy rainfall for nine days straight. According to the National Hurricane Center, over 50 inches of rain and 130 mph winds hit the area. Images of the devastation are heartbreaking.
We reached out to customers in the area to let them know we stand with them during this difficult time. Given the physical and emotional toll the tropical storm may have had on our customers and many others in the Houston area, we waived transfer fees on money they needed to send to loved ones. We did this knowing that many of our customers made promises to their loved ones in other countries to provide for and help them. Even though they were in the center of a hurricane, they amazingly still fulfilled their promise of sending money to their loved ones, money that can be vital to pay for food, housing, and medicine. We hope this small gesture helped make things a little easier for them.
In fact, 1 in 5 people sent money to their loved ones during this time. Of our customers who send money to India, almost 12% sent money not letting the hurricane get in their way of keeping their promise.
With Diwali just around the corner, we want to make sure the Diwali light reaches our customers who may have been affected by the hurricane so we put together packages filled with Diwali treats from Kolkata and a traditional Diya. We hope this package brings a little joy and light to some of our amazing customers in Houston.
