Supporting India during the recent COVID-19 outbreak

We are saddened by the news of the people affected by the COVID-19 outbreak in India. We know that many of these individuals are family members and friends of our customers. Remitly is here to support them during this time of need.

While it’s a small gesture, Remitly is giving 5 million rupees to organizations providing essential services and aid to Indian communities impacted by COVID-19 to help provide food, oxygen, and personal protective equipment to those affected.

Meet the Organizations

GiveIndia

GiveIndia has organized a campaign to donate food to families struggling with hunger during COVID-19’s second wave in India. They are providing cooked meals and ration kits to families hit hard by this pandemic.

In their own words, “each meal will be a nutritional platter comprising healthy staples like rice, daal, vegetables, chapati and more. Ration kits will contain daal, rice, salt, oil, atta, masala, tea, sugar, etc.”

Ketto: HelpNow

Hosted on the trusted crowdfunding site Ketto, HelpNow is an initiative by Indian students to address the severe gaps in transportation during the crisis.

They are providing a “safe, 24×7 logistics network” for transporting COVID patients, medications, healthcare workers, and essential medical supplies. HelpNow’s network of ambulances is a safe, reliable partner for strained city hospitals. All the vehicles are sanitized after each trip, and the ambulance staff is medically trained and equipped with a ventilator and PPE.

While they’re currently operating in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Pune, they’re raising funds to scale across India.

British Asian Trust

The British Asian Trust consulted with the Indian government and other trusted advisors and partners in India to identify the greatest needs during the COVID-19 crisis. As a result, they created the Oxygen for India Emergency Appeal to address the severe oxygen shortage in Indian hospitals.

The appeal is raising funds to distribute “as many ‘oxygen concentrators’ to hospitals as quickly as possible.” These efficient alternatives to traditional oxygen cylinders help critically ill patients to breathe.

DonateKart

In addition, we have partnered with DonateKart to provide employees and our networks the ability to purchase goods that will be distributed and delivered by NGOs (non-government organizations) and nonprofits directly to individuals and families in need of food and supplies.

The second wave of COVID-19 in India has overwhelmed the country’s healthcare system. The outbreak is exacerbated by a scarcity of medical supplies, while crippling transportation systems and deepening poverty in many areas.

These organizations are doing important, lifesaving work on the ground to make an immediate impact during this crisis. We’re honored to support them.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our Indian customers and their loved ones.
